Within a discursive environment of societal unease, physical-biological, social Darwinian, sexual and racial-theoretical lines of argumentation were extremely popular during the youth movement. It concerned concepts of improvement as well as avoidance of threats; i.e., a broad spectrum across elite selection - expulsion - eradication. What was meant by femininity and masculinity, by racial purity, by the creative possibilities of sexual life, by dealing with the body and its vital functions, by models of past forms of social organisation or those that were to be restored or reinvented? This volume addresses these questions from a "biopolitical" point of view, thus making youths' efforts - in its inherent ambivalence - both comprehensible and understandable.

Prof. Dr. Karl Braun lehrt seit 2002 am Institut fÃ"r EuropÃ¤ische Ethnologie/Kulturwissenschaft an der Philipps-UniversitÃ¤t Marburg und forscht zu spanischer Ethnologie und Kulturanthropologie, SexualitÃ¤tsgeschichte und Genderforschung sowie zur Jugendbewegung.

Felix Linzner ist Lehrbeauftragter am Institut fÃ"r EuropÃ¤ische Ethnologie/ Kulturwissenschaft der Philipps UniversitÃ¤t Marburg. Sein Dissertationsvorhaben befasst sich mit der vÃ¶lkisch rassistischen Elitekonzeption Willibald Hentschels und deren Schnittstellen zur vÃ¶lkischen Jugendbewegung sowie zum Siedlungswesen.

Dr. Uwe Puschner ist Professor fÃ"r Neuere Geschichte am Friedrich-Meinecke-Institut der Freien UniversitÃ¤t Berlin.

Dr. Susanne Rappe-Weber leitet seit 2002 das Archiv der deutschen Jugendbewegung auf Burg Ludwigstein.

Dr. David Templin ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut fÃ"r Migrationsforschung und Interkulturelle Studien (IMIS) der UniversitÃ¤t OsnabrÃ"ck. Er forscht zur Stadt- und Migrationsgeschichte, zu Jugendkulturen und sozialen Bewegungen.
