Swine-origin influenza A (H1N1), better known as swine flu, was declared by the World Health Organization as a global pandemic in June 2009. The highly contagious influenza A H1N1 virus can cause either a mild influenza-like infection that is similar to seasonal influenza, or less frequently, a rapidly progressing community-acquired pneumonic illness that can cause acute respiratory failure and even death.
