The present interdisciplinary study examines the poetic as well as the political staging of the Palatinate Wedding of 1613 in London in the occasio-typical communication media of early modern court and popular culture (epithalamium, festive description, pamphlet, sermon etc.) at the court of the Scottish-English King Jakob VI. and I. At the center of this literary and cultural studies work is the representation of the Elector Friedrich V of the Palatinate (1596–1632) and his bride Elisabeth Stuart (1596–1662) as positive icons of an apparently promising pan-Protestant Europe. In the contemporary context of family history legitimizing power and religiously motivated political illusions, the marriage covenant is stylized as a manifestation of divine will and a promising future.
