Mykhailo Hrushevsky's History of Ukraine-Rus'. Volume 7: The Cossack Age to 1625 inaugurates the History's subseries entitled "The History of the Ukrainian Cossacks". It focuses on the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks from their origins in the fifteenth century to their rise as an important military, social, and political force in the first decades of the seventeenth century. Hrushevsky examines the early history of the Cossacks in the context of Ukrainian colonization of the steppe and the extensive social changes taking place on the Ukrainian frontier. He discusses the causes and consequences of the Cossack anti-Polish uprisings of the period and investigates the interconnections between Cossackdom and the Ukrainian national, religious, and cultural revival. Hrushevsky's exhaustive study of the period marked a turning point in the historiography of Ukrainian Cossackdom. It largely ended the stage in which historians engaged mostly in the collection and publication of sources and the reconstruction of the sequence of events. Concurrently, it inaugurated the stage in which the analysis and interpretation of established facts became the primary goal of historical research. This volume was translated by Bohdan Struminski and edited by Serhii Plokhy (consulting editor) and Frank E. Sysyn (editor in chief) with the assistance of Uliana M. Pasicznyk.

Appointed professor of history at Lviv University in 1894, Mykhailo Hrushevsky became a leading figure in the scholarly and cultural community of Western Ukraine. In 1918 in Kyiv, he became head of the government of the independent Ukrainian state. From 1924 to 1931, he organized historical studies at the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. An extraordinarily prolific writer, he produced some 2,000 scholarly works.

Serhii Plokhy received his doctorate in history from Kyiv University in 1990. He was the chair of the Department of World History at Dnipropetrovsk University and conducted research at the Institute of Archeography and Source Studies of the National Academy Sciences of Ukraine, where he headed the Department of the History of Culture. He currently serves as the Associate Director of the Peter Jacyk Centre and the Director of the Church Studies Program at CIUS Press. He is the author of The Cossacks and Religion in Early Modern Ukraine (2001) (Ukrainian translation: 2006), Tsars and Cossacks: A Study in Iconography (2002), and Unmaking Imperial Russia: Mykhailo Hrushevsky and the Writing of Ukrainian History (2005).

Frank E. Sysyn is Director of the Peter Jacyk Centre for Ukrainian Historical Research at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies and Editor-in-Chief of the Hrushevsky Translation Project. He is a co-editor of Culture, Nation and Identity: The Ukrainian-Russian Encounter, 1600-1945 (2003), the author of Between Poland and Ukraine: The Dilemma of Adam Kysil, 1600-1653 (1985), and Mykhailo Hrushevsky: Historian and National Awakener (2001).
