Consulates were protection agencies of domestic commercial interests. Their reports and analyzes were an important basis for the decisions of statesmen. A short general compilation of the development of the consulates, training, duties, rights, as well as social and humane aspects, is followed by 617 careers, which were created primarily from sources in Vienna's archives. \ nFor the first time, this work offers a biographical reference work for the period from 1825 to 1918 for the consular sector of one of the five major European powers.
