Eduard Albert (1841-1900) was a doctor and surgeon, university professor, literary critic, translator, poet, patron and politician and is one of the most versatile personalities in 19th century Czech and Austrian history. The book traces all sides of Albert's life and work, his family, his career in Vienna, Innsbruck and Prague, his own literary work and the extensive translator work, social relationships and patronage. Most of the attention is paid to Albert's interest in politics and his work in the so-called Czech lobby in Vienna. Albert's afterlife and legacy in 20th century Czech society and in Austria and Germany are also examined.
