Around twelve million Germans lost their homes in Central and Eastern Europe after the Second World War. Most of it came to occupied Germany. Research and the public mostly ignore the fact that Germans from the displacement areas were also in Western Europe, Africa and America. This book focuses on displaced persons in West Germany and Canada and traces experiences that do not appear in the standard narratives on flight and displacement. In this way, the author documents the experiences of displacement of German prisoners of war, exiles and immigrants who lost their belongings in the distance from Canada. Such experiences are also part of the multifaceted history of displacement. The author compared two countries with fundamentally different public discourses on immigration. It also shows how displaced persons in western Germany and Canada eventually negotiated national identities, which, based on their regional cultural heritage, their experiences with extreme nationalism, war and displacement, as well as the difficulties in adapting to the new political, social and cultural environment reflect.
