Prostitution is not only in demand in Italy every day, and this demand exists - this should be clear at least since the "Berlusconi case" - across all social classes. Despite the steadily growing tolerance in matters of sexual morality, the providers of sexual services are still socially marginalized. In the film, however, these outsiders are omnipresent, also in Italy, a country that is famous for its traditional understanding of families and not just geographical proximity to the Catholic Church. But what makes prostitution so interesting for cinematic presentations? Is it just voyeurism or is the prostitute able to make statements about those who adhere to social conventions precisely because of their position outside of any social norms? Kristine Mörchen examines these questions in an analysis of six selected Italian films from 1950 to the present day.
