The theme of beauty runs like a red thread through the Plotinian philosophy. This book focuses in particular on the relationship between the beautiful and the good in his writings. Plato already pointed out the ethical importance of the aesthetic: Beauty awakens our Eros, which leads us to the good - above ever more sublime types of beauty. Plotinus makes this relationship even more understandable and makes it one of the pillars of his philosophy. The author goes into the current debates in Plotinian ethics and examines new results for their relevance to the ethical status of the artistic field. The plausibility and strength of Plotinian analysis of aesthetic experience and the essence of art and the artist become clear. Finally, it is examined to what extent beauty can be ascribed to the good within Plotinian philosophy.
